Medicaid renewals will not be processed during the COVID-19 emergency. You will not lose coverage. You will receive information about next steps by mail after the emergency has ended.

Health coverage from Virginia Medicaid needs to be renewed each year. This is called an annual renewal. If your local department of social services has all of the information needed to complete your renewal, this process will be done automatically. You will receive a notice in the mail telling you if your coverage will continue for another year.

If your renewal cannot be completed automatically, you will receive a paper renewal form in the mail. This means you must take action to renew your health coverage.

Renewing online or by phone is faster and easier. You can renew your health coverage in the following ways:

  1. By phone: Call Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282/TTY: 1-888-221-1590; this call is free.
  2. Online: Go to www.commonhelp.virginia.gov and click on "Renew My Benefits*."
  3. By mail or in person: Complete the paper renewal form and return it to your local department of social services.
If you do not complete your renewal, you will lose your Medicaid health coverage.

Cover Virginia has introduced a new email address for members and applicants to send requested information: covervadocs@conduent.com. You can scan and upload, attach electronic copies, or take a picture of your information and attach it to the email. This email only receives information; you will not receive a response and it cannot be used to ask questions. Please call Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282 with questions. If additional information is needed, you will be sent another letter.

*To create a CommonHelp Account:

  1. Go to www.commonhelp.virginia.gov
  2. Click "Check My Benefits"
  3. To link your case to your CommonHelp account, you will need your case number and your client ID number. These numbers are printed on the front of the paper renewal form you received in the mail. You can also call your local department of social services and ask for this information.

If you are currently enrolled in a Federal Health Insurance Marketplace plan, you need to renew your coverage annually. You can learn about the renewal process or renew your coverage at healthcare.gov
